Four ways to play The Wind Waker on a computer today, two of them native recompilations. The two recomps target different games: the 2013 Wii U remaster and the 2002 GameCube original. You need your own copy of the matching one.

Wind Waker HD Recomp (Wii U)

ZeldaWWHDRecomp/ZeldaWWHDRecomp, created October 1, 2026, MPL-2.0. The game’s PowerPC code is translated to C ahead of time, the Cafe OS libraries the game uses are reimplemented natively, and GX2 graphics are implemented directly on Metal or Vulkan, with no Cemu runtime. It does reuse some Cemu code (the GPU address library, shader decompiler and parts of the OS layer, MPL-2.0), and its rendering is compared with Cemu side by side. The project has three parts: the port, a verified decompilation (ZeldaWWHDDecomp/wwhd) that an experimental decomp build can already run on macOS, and the mod catalogue. The README says the game is playable from start to finish on macOS, Windows, Linux and Android. Latest: v0.5.1 (November 6, 2026).

Wind Waker Recomp (GameCube) and BlueWake

elliotttate/Wind-Waker-Recomp describes itself as a “personal source fork of BlueWake”. It translates the GameCube game’s code, the main executable and all 415 modules, to native x86-64 (Windows) or arm64 (Mac, iPhone, iPad) ahead of time, with no JIT; a few rare instructions fall back to an interpreter, and the hardware around the CPU (graphics, DSP audio, memory card, timing) comes from a Dolphin-derived runtime. Its README now announces that it is moving to BlueWake: downloads moved to BlueWake’s Releases page, issues were moved there, and the 0 releases here reflect that. Saves carry over on Windows (%APPDATA%\BlueWake). Tested areas in its README: the opening, Outset Island, sailing, Windfall, a late-game Hyrule save; later dungeons and bosses largely untested. The project discloses substantial AI assistance in its development.

Cemu and Dolphin

Emulators run the original console program while you play. Cemu is the Wii U emulator many players already use for Wind Waker HD; the HD recomp can bring in a Cemu save, take a Cemu archive or game folder as its source, and import Cemu graphics packs in its mod manager. Dolphin runs the GameCube original; the GameCube recomp’s runtime derives from it, it imports Dolphin .gci saves on iPhone and iPad, and it uses Dolphin-format texture packs.

Which should you choose?

  • You own the Wii U game and play on Windows, Mac, Linux, Steam Deck or Android: Wind Waker HD Recomp.
  • You own the GameCube disc (USA) and play on Windows: Wind Waker Recomp, from BlueWake’s Releases page.
  • You want it on iPhone or iPad: only the GameCube recompilation, built on a Mac.
  • You want the update’s changes or many other games: an emulator.
  • Nintendo Switch: neither; SwitchWakerHD is a separate community port built on the HD recomp.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wind Waker Recomp the same as Wind Waker HD Recomp?

No. Wind Waker HD Recomp (ZeldaWWHDRecomp/ZeldaWWHDRecomp) recompiles the Wii U remaster. Wind Waker Recomp (elliotttate/Wind-Waker-Recomp) recompiles the GameCube original; it is a source fork of BlueWake by chrissotraidis and is being merged back into BlueWake. Different code, different developers, different game files.

Can I use my Wind Waker HD copy with the GameCube recomp?

No. The GameCube recompilation only accepts the USA GameCube disc (GZLE01, revision 0); its README says the Wii U game cannot be used as the game disc. It can optionally import compatible textures from your own HD copy into a replacement pack.

Which one runs on Android or Steam Deck?

Wind Waker HD Recomp: it has an Android APK, Linux AppImages and documented Steam Deck support. The GameCube recompilation lists Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Which one runs on iPhone or iPad?

Only the GameCube recompilation (BlueWake), and you build it yourself on an Apple Silicon Mac from your own disc and sideload it; a free Apple ID’s apps expire after seven days. There is no iOS build of Wind Waker HD Recomp.

Is a recomp better than Cemu or Dolphin?

A recomp runs one game natively, starts directly once prepared and adds game-specific options (mods, randomizer, interpolation). An emulator runs many games and can use any version of your copy, including Wind Waker HD’s update, which the HD recomp does not use. Both need your own copy.

Can I bring my GameCube or Cemu save to the HD recomp?

Yes. Setup offers to bring in a Wind Waker HD save folder from Cemu or a Wii U, or a GameCube .gci converted to HD. The README says the converter was tested with 167 GameCube saves across the whole story.
